Equity Research on Impala Platinum Holdings

Business Overview

Impala Platinum (Implats) is a leading global PGM producer with operations across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Canada. Its South African portfolio includes Impala Rustenburg, Marula, and a stake in Two Rivers, supported by integrated refining and smelting facilities. In Zimbabwe, Implats owns 87% of Zimplats, a low-cost, mechanised operation on the Great Dyke. The group also owns Lac des Iles in Canada, a long-life, palladium-rich, mechanised mine. Implats’ diversified assets and processing capabilities underpin its position as a vertically integrated, regionally balanced PGM producer.

Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) is a leading PGM (platinum group metals) producer that has gradually transformed from a South Africa-centric, deep-level underground miner into a diversified, multi-regional group with a portfolio that now spans Zimbabwe and Canada. Over the last 20 years, the group has evolved through a mix of organic development, operational consolidation, and value-accretive M&A.

Group PGM 3E output reached a record 2.94Moz  refined (3,37Moz on 6E basis) in FY2024, supported by integration of RBPlat volumes (483koz 6E). However, unit costs rose materially, squeezed by inflation, Eskom power issues, and falling basket prices. Implats has responded by slowing discretionary capex (non-critical expansion and studies), reviewing underperforming shafts and operations (particularly at Impala Rustenburg), maintaining a focus on cash discipline and return on capital. Implats is expected to continue reaping the benefits of its integrated, diversified and modernised PGM portfolio. While near-term earnings may be under pressure from subdued prices, its strategic moves over the last decade position it as one of the most geographically and operationally balanced PGM miners globally.

Impala’s management structure is setup with a Group CEO, and then each major operation having its own Chief Executive: Rustenburg – Mose Motlhageng, Zimplats – Alex Mhembere, Canada – Tim Hill which enables them to possibly be sold off as standalone mines.
